As soon as you know you are moving

Make appointment with De Haan Removals
Provide termination notice for old rental contract
Put your house up for sale
Arrange mortgage
Inform school of relocation
Make arrangements with new owners regarding taking over the carpet, etc.
Arrange time-off from employer
Investigate possible reimbursement of moving expenses
Investigate possible tax reimbursement of moving expenses
Cancel maid service
Request moving notices from the post office and complete
Begin sorting items you are not taking with you to your new residence
Arrange with your phone service provider to have your telephone disconnected effective one day
        after your move
We recommend that you do not schedule your relocation on the very last day but to give yourself at
        least one-day leeway.
The following documents should be arranged ahead of time:
        1) summary of verification of residence
        2) Proof of health
        3) Original diplomas and certificates
        4) School report card of each child

4- 2 weeks before your move

Register children at new school
Order address/business cards
Inform insurance on house and personal property
Cancel service for electricity, gas and water to your old residence
Order nameplates
Continue sorting items that you will not take to new residence
Check the dates of your passport, drivers license and vaccination records.
In case you still have the original boxes for your TV, stereo or computer, please make these available
        to the movers to allow for optimal packing.

2 weeks before your move

Send change of address cards
Arrange childcare for the moving day
Arrange pet care for the moving day
Inform landlord
Redeem (store specific) savings stamps
Cancel post office box and request new post office box
Return library books
Store important papers, which you don’t need immediately, and jewelry in a safety deposit box
Advertise for sale any items of value that you don’t want to take to your new residence or dispose of
Start packing

Last few days before your move

Loosen any carpet you are taking with you
Take down lamps/light fixtures
Take down curtains (except in bedrooms)
Inform suppliers
Take down dish antenna from roof
Defrost freezer
Pack everything except items that you will need at the last moment (unless you agreed that De Haan
        Removals will arrange packing)
Pick up easy meals for the evening before and the day of the move
Check to make sure there is enough coffee for moving day
Request garbage removal
Make washing machine transport ready
Leave garbage containers empty and clean, accompanied by with garbage calendar
Bring any chemicals to the depot or chemical bus
Leave behind the “milieubox” environment box at your old residence
In case your residence is equipped with a hoisting loft, please ensure accessibility
Ensure that important documents and passports are kept separate in order for these not to be
        included in the relocation.
Please make sure you have properly disposed of all hazardous and flammable acids, i.e., fuel, paint,
        poison, cleaning supplies and perishable foods.

On the last day before your move

Defrost refrigerator and clean out
Disassemble furniture, if possible (unless you agreed that De Haan Removals will arrange this)
Remove swing from the clock
Try to reserve a place for the moving truck in front of your residence with your vehicle and perhaps
        your neighbor’s vehicle.
Pack your last minute items
Set apart your hand baggage, perhaps in a separate closet, marked “Don’t Move.”
We would like to remind you that it is your responsibility to disassemble items fixed to floors, walls and         ceilings. These need to have been disassembled before the movers arrive. (unless you agreed that De
        Haan Removals will arrange this)

On your moving day

In case of inclement weather, please make sure that your driveway is clean to prevent accidents
Take down remaining curtains
Keep all keys in your hand baggage
Keep all passports, travel documents, money and checks in your hand baggage
Walk through house to check for items left behind
Read meter
Turn off gas and electricity (except if electricity is needed to continue heating)
Turn of water in the winter (even if it is not freezing)
Shut all windows and doors firmly
Return keys to landlord or new owners

After arrival at your new residence

Place as much as possible in the correct place
Check all unpacked items for possible moving damage
Make one room “livable” as soon as possible
Hang bedroom curtains
Refrigerator and freezer – give one day rest before connecting to electricity
Remove transport safety on washing machine

After the move


Unpack everything (unless you agreed that De Haan Removals will arrange unpacking)
Hang up your nameplate on front door
Schedule pickup of empty moving boxes with De Haan Removals (options based on your
        geographical location)
Make arrangement with renter for possible moving damage to residence
Introduce yourself to the new landlord
