Our handy step-by-step guide for moving to the United States
Moving to America is quite an undertaking, with complex procedures. It’s only natural that you have many questions. That’s why we’ve created a clear, concise step-by-step guide to moving to the U.S., highlighting important aspects you’ll need to consider. These include working in America, visas or Green Cards, housing, healthcare, and of course, the relocation itself.
-
Look for a job if you’re not relocating for work.
Moving to America often means you’ll need to find a new job, unless you are emigrating for work purposes. In general, this is more challenging in the U.S. than in the Netherlands. Prepare thoroughly: ensure you have the right financial resources, an up-to-date resume, and solid references from your most recent employer. Because the process can take time and because moving to America involves costs, you can already start job hunting from the Netherlands by sending open applications to companies.
-
Arrange your Green Card when moving to America.
A Green Card is a permanent residence permit that gives you the same rights and obligations as any other U.S. citizen (except voting). You can obtain it through your employer (for example, if you’re emigrating for work), by marrying an American citizen, or by planning to make a significant investment in the U.S.—for example, by starting a business there. Read our blog for more information about applying for residency permits.
-
Think about where you want to settle.
With so many states to choose from, it’s important to decide where you want to live when moving to America. Due to the country’s vast size, there is a wide variety in climate, landscape, and culture from state to state. Do your research to determine where you’d like to live. Visit forums to prepare for your move and take the time to learn about everyday life there.
-
The actual relocation to the United States: make sure your documents are in order.
The documents required, and the conditions applied, depend on your personal situation. Standard documentation includes a valid passport and inventory lists of the goods to be shipped. However, when moving to America, you also need to ensure your visa, residence, and/or work permits are in order. Incorrect or incomplete paperwork will not only cause customs delays but may also lead to additional costs. Your belongings may not be cleared in or out of customs, leaving them stuck at the port. We, along with our reliable and experienced partners in the U.S., are happy to guide you through this complex documentation process.
Customer quote (Miriam, moved from the Netherlands to the U.S.):
"De Haan was great to work with from start to finish of the move. They were always responsive to emails and any questions I had, and were very professional."
-
Arrange your healthcare in America.
After your move, you are not automatically insured for healthcare in the U.S. You will need to arrange this yourself with a private insurer. Don’t forget—medical bills in the U.S. can quickly become very expensive.
-
Explore driving in America.
Your Dutch driver’s license is valid for the first three months of your stay in the U.S. After that period, you’ll need to take a driving test to obtain a U.S. driver’s license.
