Moving to Rotterdam is a dream coming true. You can bike effortlessly along the waterline of this Harbor City like all the Dutchies, enjoy a beer in its city center or parks and work in one of the most modern cities of The Netherlands. This is wat you need to know to move to Rotterdam.

The second largest city in the Netherlands

In terms of population, Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is known for its trade history, and you can find much of it in the port city of Rotterdam. The modern architecture, multicultural society and many companies make it a special city in which to settle.

While tourists mainly enjoy the Cube Houses around the Markthal and the beautiful Laurenskerk, the water bus, harbor tours and various museums and parks, you may have other reasons to move to Rotterdam, nicknamed the Maasstad. Perhaps your employer will open a new office in Rotterdam, or you will find the love of your life here.

Whatever your reasons, De Haan will be happy to assist you with your move to Rotterdam. What do you need to know before moving to Rotterdam and what are the costs of moving to Rotterdam? We summarize it briefly for you on this page.

Why do you want to move to Rotterdam?

Moving to Rotterdam is becoming increasingly popular. Largely because of the rich history and the port of Rotterdam, which is still the largest port in Europe. Many logistics companies have their headquarters in the city, but it is also increasingly a popular location for innovative startups. In addition, the internationally recognized Erasmus University is in Rotterdam. This makes moving to Rotterdam attractive for expats or other people looking for a new job. Although the international community is smaller than in Amsterdam, many people in the Netherlands speak good English

How to move to Rotterdam?

These are a few of the things you need to know before reconsidering your move to Rotterdam. Moving from UK to Rotterdam is a popular move but has become more complicated by the Brexit. We, therefore, would love to help you when you consider moving to Rotterdam from UK. Moving to Rotterdam from US has always been a bit more difficult because of the visa that you need to get. But it is less difficult than moving from Rotterdam to a city in the United States.

1: Housing can be very expensive

The city is full of students, expats, and other Dutch people. This means that it can be difficult to find a house to rent and even buy. That is also the reason that many people move to other cities near Rotterdam. Having said so, many people now like Rotterdam as it is not as crowded as Amsterdam.

2: Most people speak English

The good thing about The Netherlands and Rotterdam is that the people are very international, and tourist oriented. A lot of menus are also available in English, and you can work almost everywhere when you speak English. Isn’t that great?

3: Public transportation is well organized in the city

Most Rotterdammers cycle when it comes to destinations in and near the city center. Parking with a car is not only very difficult, but also expensive. When you move to Rotterdam, we therefore advise you to purchase a bicycle if you do not have one yet. Fortunately, public transport is also well organized. From Rotterdam Central Station you can be at Schiphol Airport in just 30 minutes and within 45 minutes you can be at Amsterdam Central Station with an intercity direct train.

4: Official documents that you need

When you are moving to Rotterdam you also need to arrange some official documents. You also need to register the move at the Municipality Hall of the city. Besides that, you also need:

  • A passport (when living outside the EU/EEA states)
  • An ID-card (when living in the EU/EEA states, Iceland, Liechtenstein. Norway or Switzerland)
  • Your birth certificate
  • A rental contract or proof of a house purchase in Rotterdam
  • A marriage or divorce certificate (if you have one)
