Moving abroad? Don't forget these practical things

Moving abroad is not an easy thing to do. It takes a lot of planning before you get on a plane or car to your new home country. There are a number of formalities that you absolutely must comply with and also a few practical matters that must be arranged in advance.

We have listed them here for you so that you know exactly what is involved in moving abroad.

• Check whether you need a visa when moving abroad or emigrating
• Moving your household effects abroad: for example with the help of a reliable and internationally certified foreign removal specialist such as De Haan.
• Moving furniture abroad: your bed, sofa and cupboards must of course also be taken to your new place of residence. De Haan arranges this for you. With or without mounting.
• Arrange or renew official documents such as your identity papers (passport, ID card or driver's license), your health insurance, apply for an international driving license and stop any surcharges you receive from the Dutch tax authorities.
• Check whether the diplomas you obtained in the Netherlands are legally valid. By legalizing a document, you can prove that the document is genuine after moving abroad.
• Do not forget to deregister from the population register of your municipality. This must be done at least five days before your departure. Ask for proof of deregistration from the Netherlands.
• Register with the foreign municipality where you are going to live.
• Do you want to move your car abroad as part of your household contents? Ask us about the possibilities.
• Stop all subscriptions.
• Make sure you have an overview of all banking affairs and that your move abroad has also been reported to your bank. After all, you want to be able to access your money in your new home country.
